The fact that media is reporting that the US is now flying armed drones over Iraq is nothing new. ABC News reported on 24 June that the US military has been flying manned and unmanned surveillance flights over Iraq to share information with the Iraqi government. A US Department of Defense spokesman stated to ABC News that they have been conducting 30-35 daily surveillance flights over Iraq since the start of the crisis.
On 24 June, an air strike occurred on the western border of Syria and Iraq. The Iraqi government announced that the US is responsible for executing the bombings. The Pentagon has denied the Iraqi media report and states that it was the Syrian government that executed the bombing. There has been no solid evidence that the air strike on the western border was committed the Syrian government.
US officials have told NBC news that the US is flying F-18 fighter jets over Iraq. The armed drones (Predator) are fitted with Hellfire missiles and will be used to protect US interests in Iraq.
The US government is reporting that the drones flying over Iraq are there for “force protection” of the US personnel working in Iraq.
