The Pentagon has announced that the commander in chief has authorized the deployment of 1,500 troops over the coming months, in a non-combat role. The Soldiers will be conducting assessments and training the Iraqi military.
The Secretary of Defense Hagel made the recommendation to President Obama because the Army General in Baghdad is requesting the additional soldiers.
The U.S. Central Command will be setting up two expeditionary advise and assist operations centers outside of Baghdad and Erbil. The U.S. Military will be training 9 Iraqi army and 3 Peshmerga brigades. The training sites will be in three locations in Iraq.
The coalition partners will be conducting training along with the U.S. at the training centers.
