A Jordanian F-16 fighter jet was flying over Syria on a bombing mission near the Syrian city of Raqqa. The fighter jet was either shot down or has crashed in Syria. The Islamic State (IS) militants captured the fighter pilot. The Islamic State militants who are also known by ISIS, ISIL and Daesh.
There are pictures of the pilot on social media accounts. The pilot is being shown taking out of water or possibly a lake and surrounded by the Islamic State militants. There are additional pictures showing the IS recovering the wreckage of the F-16 and loading onto vehicles.
The Jordanian government has acknowledged the name of the captured pilot as 1st Lt. Moaz al-Kasasbeh.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a British-based group that monitors the war in Syria through contacts on the ground, also said militants had brought the plane down with an anti-aircraft missile.
