I hope that everyone is paying attention to the world news on what is happening in Iraq and Syria.
Let me summarize:
For the second time in a week, the terrorist organization Islamic State have shot down an Iraq military helicopter. The Islamic State have acquired these weapons from other groups that have been funded by other Middle Eastern countries.
The Man Portable weapons used to shoot down the Iraqi military helicopters poses a serious threat to the Iraq military and coalition forces. More than likely, we’ll see more of these type of attacks against the Iraq military as they fly at a lower altitude.
The government of Turkey has stated that they will not conduct a ground operation against the Islamic State by themselves. They would like to be a part of a broader military operation against the Islamic State. Turkey still refuses to allow the U.S. military to operate from military bases inside Turkey in order to attack the Islamic State.
The Turkish-Syria border town Kobani has not been completely overtaken by the Islamic State. It is possible that the town will eventually fall to Islamic State as the Turkish Military survey the house to house fighting.
Baghdad is still at risk of falling in the hands of the Islamic State militants. The militants are within 20 minutes of the Baghdad city limits. I am in continuous contact with friends and colleagues in Iraq who are finding it very difficult to carry on living their normal daily lives. They are anxiously waiting for the Iraqi government to act against the Islamic State. The Iraqi government has been unable to send supplies and reinforcements to an Iraq army unit fighting the Islamic State 30 minutes away. The Iraqi military has been boggled with logistics and leadership problems.
Iraq also needs to get on the ball and take the necessary steps in naming a Ministry of Defense and Interior as soon as possible.
