At a recent press briefing in Baghdad, PM Maliki announced the following:
1. Council of Ministers has decided to declare a state of high alert and to mobilize all efforts to face up to the existing challenges
2. The seriousness of the situation needs immediate and swift measures to preserve the national security and the people. This requires the offices of the prime minister and the presidency to ask parliament to shoulder its responsibility and declare a state of emergency and general mobilization.
Prime Minister Maliki has called on the United Nations, the European Union and the Arab League to support Iraq in fighting the ISIL terrorists.
Osama Nuajaifi, the speaker of Iraq’s parliament, was quoted as saying: “When the battle got tough in the city of Mosul, the troops dropped their weapons and abandoned their posts, making it an easy prey for the terrorists”.
